Name: Kanon Ochi
Age: 27
Gender: Female
Village: Kumogakure
Rank: Jounin
Nature Manipulation: Lightning/Water
Appearance:
Standing at a fair height of 5’8” and weighing 136lbs, Kanon has a petit frame and lightly tanned skin. Lean and lithe, she has slim limbs and angular features that give her a hawk like look. Her heart shaped face has high cheekbones and a pointed chin, along with a hooked nose and close-set narrow eyes. Her lips are thin and constantly set in a thin line, giving her the illusion of being constantly angry.
Kanon’s dark brown hair is almost always braided into a single braid down her back which is then wrapped into a bun at the base of her skull in order to keep it out of her face while on a mission. She also pins her bangs back behind her ears. Given her strict outlook on life, it isn’t surprising that most of the inhabitants of Kumogakure have never seen her with her hair down. However, if it was allowed to fall loosely, Kanon’s hair would be observed to have gentle waves and fall to her midback. In contrast to her dark hair, her pale grey eyes are small and beady, and her thin eyebrows are often furrowed in a glare.
Kanon carries herself with an air of confidence, keeping a stern look on her face. She is known to break her façade to show emotion if someone close to her was in need, but she prefers to keep the image of a strict jounin. Her contralto voice is about the sweetest thing about her, with soft lilting vocal tones.
For her clothing, Kanon starts by wrapping tight bindings around her wrists and ankles, followed by steel plates on her forearms and shins. She then wears a modest long-sleeved lavender blouse that has no ornamentation save for some simple embroidery around the end of the sleeves that has no distinct form to it. The sleeves do not bell out, but stay close to her wrists in order to not distract her. Over that she wears the typical jounin vest. She also wears navy blue pants. Her sandals are hand-me-downs from her older sister, and as such are worn down from use. A pouch is tied to her right thigh with kunai in easy reach of her dominant hand. More kunai and shuriken are concealed in her jounin garb.
On an occasion where her jounin garb is not required, Kanon will still bind her wrists and ankles, but trade in her pants for a long, navy blue yukata with a lavender sash around her waist. It has a ‘Y’ shaped neckline that is lined with a light green hem, and has long sleeves. She keeps shuriken concealed in the wide sash. She wears the same sandals from her jounin outfit.
She usually wears her ninja headband (which has a white cloth) around her upper left arm.
Finally, while travelling, Kanon will wear a long hooded cloak over her jounin garb that contains numerous pouches for scrolls containing extra ranged weapons.
Personality:
If one were to describe Kanon Ochi in a single word, it would be strict. She expects a lot out of her pupils, and deals harsh punishments in the event of failure. She is not a very warm person, keeping a sense of formality between her and her genin teams, and expects no nonsense. She hates it when her students fool around. She tends to be cool and reserved, not developing relationships beyond teacher-student. Despite this, she does care for her genin, although she would never show it. Instead, she will offer a tight lipped smile if one accomplished something, or slowly clap her hands in approval. She tends to be very serious and restrained, however, and hates to show emotion.
Kanon is a fast learner, and highly intelligent. Although not at the top of her Academy class, she was close to the top, and showed a lot of promise as a tactician. She comes up with plans quickly, yet tends to stick to the book. She isn’t very creative, and would much rather use a straightforward strategy than one that required improvisation. This isn’t to say that she can’t improvise – in a tight situation, Kanon’s quick thinking is able to get her out of a bind in any possible way. She keeps to her morals, and doesn’t take risks unless absolutely necessary.
Very emotionally stable, Kanon doesn’t let her feelings distract her. She constantly reminds herself to stick to reality and, as a result, doesn’t get upset easily. She is calm and mature, albeit very strict. Kanon is prone to outbursts in the case of a student who simply isn’t listening to her. In this situation, Kanon tends to raise her voice and talk in a shrill voice. Because of this well known fact about her, it is commonly assumed by others that she is the most pleased with her genin when she is silent. This is, in fact, true. If she doesn’t speak, then she is happy. This is due to her being a very private person. She doesn’t like it when others know about her personal life.
Kanon is very stubborn. She is very self-assured and doesn’t like it when others tell her what to do. She can also be very assertive when she wants something. Ninja who have had her as their jounin in the past have described her as bossy and forceful. She can often be found running her genin through rigorous training and repaying failure with harsh words.
Despite her strictness with her students, Kanon is very pleasant among her close friends and those she respects. She is known for being socially bold, not afraid to enter a conversation, and isn’t afraid to speak her mind. She also thinks lowly of timid and hesitant students.
Kanon views herself as self-reliant and self sufficient, but welcomes the opportunity to pass on her knowledge to new genin – as long as they do not fool around during training, she actually enjoys teaching others. However, she tends to be very precise and is a self-described perfectionist, which fuels her need to punish her students when they don’t perform to her expectations.
Despite her strict and stubborn nature, Kanon is in fact very relaxed and composed. She is driven to succeed, but knows that she needs to be calm. However, she can’t help but be a little impatient at times, due to her high expectations.
Finally, Kanon has truly matured greatly since her childhood days, in fact, one would not recognize her as the foolish genin who gossiped with her best friend all the time instead of focusing on training.

History:
It was a chilly October morning and Yoshi Yamashita was pacing outside the birthing room. His now middle child, Nobuyuki, was sitting on the floor, whereas his eldest child, Hoshi was in the room, helping the midwives deliver the new baby. After a long labour, the new baby girl was handed to Yoshi. She was named Kanon. Her mother Miku, however, fell ill not long after giving birth to the infant, and was unable to take the child into her arms outside of the birthing room for several weeks.
Now, Yoshi was a well-respected jounin in Kumogakure. He was the fourth and final child of a well respected jounin. After meeting the love of his life, Miku (another jounin), he settled down and married her. The two moved into a small apartment, and both ninja continued their line of work. Less than two months after they were married, their first child was on its way. Hoshi was a particularly strong lunged baby girl, whereas their second child, Nobuyuki (born two years after Hoshi) was very quiet. As their family grew, Miku and Yoshi decided to move to a larger apartment, as Miku wanted more children.
After Kanon was born five years later, Miku convinced Yoshi to try for one more child. The child was stillborn. Miku, distraught, resigned herself to looking after her living children diligently; they almost never had time to be themselves. Yoshi, while worried about his wife’s behaviour, allowed her to do what she felt was right.
It was obvious very early on that Nobuyuki resented the fact that he was no longer the baby of the family. Despite being five years old, he began crawling around and only making use of baby talk. However, one element remained constant – he would spend hours staring at the baby in interest, or perhaps disdain, but nonetheless, he would glare at anyone whom he didn’t recognize who came to see the baby. Meanwhile, the seven year old Hoshi became Mommy’s little helper with Kanon, offering to help out whenever she was needed.
Kanon was a loud baby. She could often be heard no matter where one was in the Yamashita apartment screaming at the top of her lungs. As she started to settle in, she would squirm happily in her crib, smiling at whoever looked at her when she wasn’t screaming or crying.
By seven months, Kanon was rolling around, and she was able to lift her head a month later. By ten months, she could sit up by herself. Crawling came quickly behind, as did sitting upright. By one year old, she was keeping up with developmental standards by being able to stand up. Kanon had no developmental issues, and was keeping up with other children her age.
In her early years, Kanon had one toy that was her favourite above all the rest – a stuffed dog. She cried whenever she could not find it, and when she had it, she hugged it, kissed it, tried to feed it, and, most simply, played with it whenever she could. It was her Inu-chan, and she kept it even throughout her teenage years.
Life continued for the happy toddler. By the time she turned 3, Hoshi was set to begin her schooling at the Shinobi Academy. Kanon couldn’t understand why her big sister had to leave now for most of the day. While Nobuyuki took it rather well, as he had a chance to be the mature child at home, Kanon always cried as Hoshi left the apartment in the morning, and as good as tackled the girl when she arrived home. Hoshi had become like a mentor to Kanon over the years, and she didn’t like that she couldn’t see the older girl as often any more. However, some good came out of this new development as Nobuyuki and Kanon started to bond as siblings in the absence of Kanon’s role model.
Two years later came the day that Nobuyuki started his schooling. Once again, Kanon was dumbfounded. Now her big brother was leaving her? It didn’t make sense! It didn’t help that by this time, both of her parents were back in the field, taking missions. Kanon was left at home with a babysitter, her grandmother. Satomi was Yoshi’s mother, and a strict elderly lady. However, she was kindly towards her youngest granddaughter, and the two would spend the days looking at books and painting. It was during this time that Kanon met her best friend and future teammate, Ran Watanabe. Ran and Kanon would spend hours running around the village with Satomi watching over them. The two became fast friends quickly, and would tell each other everything. Ran had the added influence of introducing Kanon to the world of suffering, as her mother was killed while on a mission when the duo were six years old. Ran, being an only child, cried for days, and withdrew into a carefully guarded shell. Kanon wasn’t sure what was wrong with her best friend, and tried her best to comfort the girl, but when Satomi gently pulled her aside to tell her that Ran had lost someone very close to her and that she should stop bothering her, that she would be okay soon, Kanon realized what the problem was.
Kanon went to the Watanabe residence one day with a bored Nobuyuki and excitedly told a sullen Ran that they were going for a walk. While her brother tagged along to make sure the two girls didn’t get into trouble, Kanon led Ran back to the Yamashita residence and took her to her room, where she happily produced a favourite toy of Ran’s that the girl had forgotten one day before her mother had died. The sight of the toy didn’t have the desired results, however, as Ran burst into tears. As it turned out, the toy had been given to Ran by her mother. Satomi was able to calm her down and take her home, and when she returned, she told Kanon the full truth about Ran’s mother and reminded her that she had been told not to bother Ran.
After this incident, Kanon heeded her grandmother’s words and allowed Ran to recover from her ordeal. By the time both girls were 8, they were closer than ever. It was also at this point that both of her siblings were finally genin, and in fact, Hoshi had just become a chunin. At this point in her life, Kanon felt a little left out as both Yoshi and Miku were fawning over the fact that two of their children had followed in their footsteps and become shinobi. Kanon resolved then to become a shinobi so she would get the same amount of attention her siblings did.
Yet Kanon couldn’t help but feel a little resentful. Both of her siblings had abandoned her. Nobuyuki was away on a mission, as was her role model Hoshi. Her parents were regularly away, especially since Yoshi had a team of genin to look after. Due to this, Kanon grew steadily more attached to Grandma Satomi as she was one of two constants in her life, the other being Ran. Little did she know that tragedy not unlike Ran’s own would soon strike her life.
No, neither of her parents were killed. But her grandfather and Yoshi’s father passed away from a severe heart attack when Kanon turned 9. Satomi was devastated, and it fell upon Hoshi, who was home at the moment, to try to get the news to Yoshi and his three older brothers, as they were all away on various missions (one was a travelling minstrel, but the family didn’t often speak of his profession outwardly). All but the eldest were able to return home in due time without compromising their mission, and the family said their final farewells to a man who had raised 3 powerful jounin in their own right.
The following year, it was just Kanon’s luck that her entire family was home to see her head off to the Academy for the first time. Ran and her walked through the doors together and boy, were they in for a surprise. Kanon and Ran were foolish, outgoing children who couldn’t be serious to save their lives, and here they were, supposed to settle down and focus on learning the basics of being a shinobi. On her first day at the Academy, Kanon and Ran generally made fools of themselves in front of all of the other children, including one serious young lad known as Rikuto Ochi. Rikuto was one of the few who scorned the antics of the silly duo, telling Kanon to her face that she should calm down. Of course, Kanon didn’t listen to this goody-two-shoe, and continued on with her antics.
Throughout her Academy days, Kanon and Ran continued to make fools out of themselves, spreading gossip about the other children and especially Rikuto. However, one day, Kanon’s subconscious fears were realized. Hoshi came to pick her up from the Academy one day, only to learn that Kanon had written foolish answers on a written test and subsequently failed it. Hoshi was visibly disappointed in her baby sister, and Kanon could feel the tension in the air. It wasn’t until after dinner on a rare occasion when everyone in the family was home that Hoshi quietly got up from her spot in a corner, reading, to whisper something in Yoshi and Miku’s ears.
Kanon was playing with Inu-chan in her room when the door flew open and her parents stepped into the room, a frown on Yoshi’s face. But Kanon was more afraid of her mother, who wore a look of disappointment not unlike Hoshi’s face from earlier. The two spoke to her about her poor grades at the Academy and warned her that if she didn’t smarten up and be more serious about her schoolwork, they wouldn’t allow her to see Ran anymore. Kanon was understandable shaken by this encounter and the following day at the Academy, despite Ran’s urging to fool around instead of focus on the lesson, Kanon paid attention. Even though Kanon resolved to be more serious about school work, she managed to save her friendship with Ran, and the two remained close throughout the next couple of years. This resolution paid off as when Kanon turned 13, she graduated from the Academy near the top of the class. Of course, Rikuto was at the very top.
When the new genin teams were assigned, Kanon was delighted to learn that she and Ran were assigned to the same team under the jounin Hotaka Sato. However, this excitement wore off when she learned the name of their third teammate. Rikuto Ochi. There had to be some mistake! The duo and Rikuto had never gotten along throughout their Academy days, and they were supposed to work together? Regardless, Hotaka-sensei ensured that the duo and Rikuto reached a sort of understanding and bonded as a team, albeit with some tension.
As genin, the team went on several missions over the next few years. At this point, it was almost impossible for the entire Yamashita family to be together, as they were each constantly in and out. Hoshi had been made a jounin, and Nobuyuki was a well respected chuunin. The only consolation was that Miku, who had been having issues with her legs, retired to relieve a quickly aging Satomi from looking after the Yamashita residence.
Team 3 proved to be an efficient team. They were well rounded, as Kanon specialized in Ninjutsu, Rikuto specialized in Genjutsu and Ran specialized in Taijutsu. The duo, however, fell back into their old way of life, and began gossiping and fooling around when not on a mission rather than working on honing their skills. On the contrary, Rikuto continued to work at improving until he was easily legions ahead of the duo. Team 3 saw little combat, but the little bit they did see was enough to increase the dynamic of the team, as they were forced to work together. Kanon failed to see Hotaka as anyone but her sensei, still relying on Hoshi to be her role model. Inside, she was annoyed that she hadn’t gotten one of her uncles, her father or even Hoshi as her jounin, but she did respect the man for his ability to deal with her and Ran and their antics.
When it came time for the year’s chuunin exams, Hotaka judged that they were ready to challenge the exam and attempt to become chuunin. The first two sections of the exam were difficult, considering the strained relationship between the duo and Rikuto, but they managed to make it through to the third section. In her first battle, Kanon was put up against another kunoichi whom she managed to defeat in battle thanks to her effective use of lightning release ninjutsu. However, she was not made a chuunin in the end due to her lack of discipline. Not surprisingly, Ran also was not made a chuunin, but Rikuto was. A year passed, and the duo attempted the chuunin exams again. This time, Kanon had matured enough and was promoted to chuunin, but once again, Ran remained a genin. At this point, their friendship took a slight dip as Ran was bitter about failing the chuunin exam twice.
Now a chuunin, Kanon carried out various missions for the Hidden Cloud Village, doing whatever she could. Her siblings were both jounin now, and she resolved to join Hoshi and Nobuyuki. Meanwhile, her father finally retired after a serious injury, and Kanon faced the second tragedy in her family’s life – Grandma Satomi passed away.
Kanon took time to grieve for her beloved grandmother, but eventually returned to her line of duty with a new development. She had already had several crushes on various boys from her genin days, but at the age of 18, she met up with a familiar face. He had been a slightly nerdy yet highly serious Academy student, a highly nerdy and very mature genin, and now, he was an attractive, even sexy chunin. Kanon had changed as well, from the hyperactive Academy student to the cute, kindly chunin. After meeting at random occurrences so often Kanon thought he was stalking her, Rikuto finally asked Kanon if they might meet for ramen. Within a few weeks, the two were dating.
When Ran and Kanon next met, the still genin was furious that Kanon was seeing their former banter rival. Still, they managed to rekindle their friendship yet again and Ran eventually warmed up to Rikuto, even letting him offer her advice that would lead to her finally passing the next chuunin exam. The three were finally together again.
That year contained another big event for Kanon. She hadn’t been the only Yamashita to find love; Hoshi was getting married to her three year boyfriend, Hideki. It was with pride that Kanon attended the wedding, even serving as Hoshi’s maid of honour. The older girl continued to be a role model to Kanon, even though she went on to have a child less than a year after marriage.
Soon enough, Kanon and Rikuto were both promoted to jounin. Kanon continued to carry out her duties, having matured greatly from her Academy and genin days. She began to develop her skills as a tactician, and some of Rikuto’s seriousness began to rub off on her as she next to completely shed the skin of the child who loved to fool around. As she began to grow into the strict teacher she eventually would become, she gained a nickname related to her family’s trademark hawk like facial features and her use of lightning release ninjutsu – The Lightning Hawk.
It was also at this time that Kanon realized that what she truly loved in life was teaching others. She had already began to teach Ran some of the lightning release ninjutsu that she had mastered long ago, and would also help out at the Academy when she was not on a mission. Through her teaching, however, she assumed a no nonsense philosophy and fully became the strict lady she would be known for.
At the age of 22, Kanon was approached to lead a team of newly graduated genin. Makato Yoshida, Nanami Ito and Taichi Maeda were a rambunctious group, and eerily reminded Kanon of Rikuto, Ran and herself. The four of them went on several missions, as Kanon would not let them attempt the chuunin exam until she was sure they were ready. She expected nothing but excellence from them, as they had shown great promise in the Academy, despite Nanami’s obvious flaw of not paying attention.
On one mission, Kanon lost her temper with Taichi and Nanami, the two who reminded her of herself and Ran. They had been fooling around and managed to give away their position during a stealth mission. After that, Kanon decided that the best way to deal with troublemakers was to be strict and formal, and that she shouldn’t get too close with her students lest she forget her new morals and allow something like the stealth mission incident to happen again.
Team Yamashita challenged the chuunin exams a while after the stealth mission incident, becoming chuunin on their second attempt for Makato and Taichi, and third attempt for Nanami. With the three now chuunin off on their way, Kanon turned her attention back towards her now boyfriend of several years. Rikuto and her were finding it difficult to spend time together, as Rikuto had been chosen to become an ANBU in the Hidden Cloud Village and Kanon had spent so much time working with her genin squad. However, Rikuto finally found time to take Kanon to a secluded area in the village where he proposed to her.
Kanon was, to say the least, flabbergasted. However, she accepted the ring and went home with her now fiancé to tell her family. Miku was delighted and Yoshi joked around with Rikuto. Nobuyuki, on the other hand, seemed genuinely concerned and questioned whether his baby sister was sure at a later date when Rikuto wasn’t around. When she visited Hoshi to give her the news, Hoshi was so happy that she decided to arrange for a full Yamashita and Ochi family dinner at her place.
At the dinner, Kanon hadn’t been able to resist inviting Ran, so the two families plus Ran got to know each other well before Ran and Hoshi acted as bridesmaids for the marriage of Kanon Yamashita and Rikuto Ochi. The immature Kanon was no more. Kanon Ochi would be mature and responsible, and was already being considered to lead yet another genin team.
RP Sample:
Kanon frowned.
“No! Listen to me! I will not have you make a fool out of your team or myself! Now get up, and do it again. I want it perfect!” she yelled in her well-known shrill voice. As the genin in question cowered under her fierce glare, Kanon felt a pang of guilt. She already had a reputation for being a particularly strict jounin, and she had been told in the past that most were afraid to work with her.
Kanon watched as the genin tried again. This time, the technique was performed better, but not yet perfect. However, as the poor lad was panting, and still looked terrified from her previous snapping, Kanon settled for offering the boy a tight lipped smile and turning her attention to the next genin assigned to her.
“Now you. Don’t you dare fool around, mister!” she said, glaring at him. She let him start towards the same tree the first genin had walked up, and then spoke up.
“No. You have already seen Makato attempt to walk up that tree. I want you to try that one,” Kanon said, pointing to a different tree. She then crossed her arms and watched, keeping the other two genin in the corner of her eye. They were an interesting group, she thought, but often tested her patience. They reminded her of… of…
Why, they reminded her of her old team!
Kanon stiffened as she realized that the genin team she was in charge of was a lot like her own teammates from her days as genin. Makato always tried his best to carry out whatever she asked of him, just like Rikuto had once done. Also, like Rikuto, he was easily the most serious about being a ninja, if a little overconfident. Nanami was like a miniature Ran. The two kunoichi were sweet, yes, but loved to gossip and were very aloof to what was going on. And Taichi… the lad fooled around a lot, just like she used to do when she was a genin. It was surprising how much her genin team resembled the trio of genin who had once worked together under Hotaka-sensei…
Pulling herself back to reality, Kanon instantly regretted doing so, as Taichi decided to fool around while walking up the tree. Furious, she glared at him, her hawk-like features giving her a fearsome appearance.
“Get down here this instant!” she snapped, putting a stop to the giggles coming from Nanami. Out of the corner of her eye, she caught sight of Makato frowning. Yes, he definitely reminded her of Rikuto.
