An impatient ninja waited outside of a home, on the roof. She started out sitting there but fidgeted and moved around until she was hanging upside down, her knees bent over the roof where it came to a slight point. It had been years since she heard from her father, but recently he had contacted her and asked her to wait for him to get home from the hospital where he worked as a surgeon. The message had sounded urgent.
“Ugh! Come on already. You’re late as usual old man.”
The annoyed tone in her voice was obvious, if not a little played up. If there was one thing she hated to do, it was to wait on other people after being asked to meet them somewhere. She could be out training right now, or on a mission, or doing something more constructive than this. How was she supposed to show her pride for her village by sitting around waiting for old people?
In the distance, a figure dressed in white appeared. Slowly, he made his way along the path, taking his time as if he hadn’t anything important to do. Neena’s lavender eyes turned to view this, her lips pursed to keep her from cursing the man’s desire to be purposefully slow as to waste her time. When he got there, she would give him a piece of her mind, she didn’t care that he was her father.
“Neena, good to see you got my message. I apologize that I wasn’t more precise in the purpose of this.”
“Comeon, pops, cut the small chat and pleasantries, why did you call me here?”
“As abrupt as ever, I see. Very well. I have been hearing about this new style of jutsu you seem to have acquired. I find it interesting that you chose to use taijutsu and fire release jutsu without combining the two properly. I know how, if you are willing to learn.”
“As long as it’s nothing like that healing jutsu you tried to teach me as a kid, then I’m game. There’s no way I’m going to learn anatomy, that crap’s too hard.”
“Don’t worry, this jutsu should come naturally to you.”
“Good. I’ve got to get back to my missions.”
“Do you still not have a team?”
“No, and it sucks fish eyes. Just because I’m different doesn’t mean I’m not responsible enough to be a leader.”
“Keep working hard and you will get there. Perhaps this new skill will help you. Let’s go to that spot you and your mother used to train at.”
“Beat ya there.”
With that the two ninja were off. They made their way through the village by way of room tops, as to not disturb anyone with their race. It wasn’t long before they were in the forest and at what looked to be a kenjutsu training ground that had been used heavily and then abandoned.
It had been a great number of years since the red haired ninja outgrew this training location. It brought back many fond memories. It was here that she first picked up a sword. This was where she grew up. A smile graced her face as she stared at the different training stations that had been set up for her. Then her eyes landed on it. An intrusive figure made of straw had been placed here in the middle of the area. Just seeing it but in on her memories was enough to make her despise it.
“What is that and why is it here?”
“This is going to be your target. Now, get out your sword.”
“Are you sure you’re feeling alright? I thought you disapproved of my kenjutsu.”
“This isn’t about that anymore. This is about you progressing as part of the village.”
Neena removed her sword from the black sheath that protected the carefully sharpened blade. The hilt had been wrapped with black leather to worm a grip that was comfortable for her small hand. For her size, the sword had been custom forged by a weapon smith her mother had often visited for her own weaponry. It was a family secret that the clan they did business with made the best blades in the country. At least, that was their opinion.
“What you have to do, is focus your chakra flow down your arm and into your blade. Your mother always says that the blade is just an extension of yourself, this is an exercise to literally make that true. As long as you have had that blade, you should feel comfortable enough with it to effectively complete this training session.”
Was that it? Was that the only lesson she was going to learn? Neena found herself a bit frustrated that she had waited for nearly an hour just to learn how to extend her chakra to her sword. Slowly, a red glow began to form around her hand and creep up her blade. It was progress, but it was slow.
“That’s a start, but at your rank you can do much better. Put more focus into it and stop thinking about everything else.”
The young woman bit back a rude retort and did as she was instructed. Her blade had a red aura. She had to admit, it looked pretty cool. Maybe the old man wasn’t as behind the times and disconnected from her as she thought he was.
“That’s better. Now increase the flow, set it on fire.”
Neena grinned, her father was actually telling her to set something on fire. Once she did this it would look so cool and be such a strong technique that there would be no way they would refuse her application to take leadership of a team. Taking a deep breath, she counted to three, building up her chakra bit by bit, until the blade appeared to be alight with fire.
“Good, now cut down the straw man.”
“About time we got rid of that thing.”
She ran for the offending effigy and struck it with the flaming sword. The straw burst into flames as the top of it fell off the sturdy bottom half. Never before had she ever done something that cool. Sure, Neena considered how awesome a flaming sword would be an the usefulness of such a thing in a fight. The fiery sword died down to a red aura before returning completely to normal.
“Wow, that used some chakra. Hey, is it supposed to use that much up?”
“You over did it. You must control how much power you put into it and properly conserve your chakra. Practice this and you will be using it properly in no time. I do suggest you try to keep from fully setting it on fire, the red aura is enough.”
“Right, right. Say, do you think this could be used with taijutsu?”
“Good thinking. Perhaps we should work on that, next?”
It was a pleasant surprise for the redhead that a training session with her father would turn into her not only learning a cool new jutsu, but also setting up future sessions to further implement it. In the past, during her childhood, training with him usually meant arguments and rage. She was happy to know he finally come to terms with her way of doing things. Perhaps these last few years had changed them both for the better.
