Name: Tsubame Ishida
Age: 13
Gender: Female
Village: Iwakagure
Rank: Genin
Nature Manipulation: Earth
Appearance:
Tsubame has a habit of leaning forward, of giving the impression that she's always ready to step off at a moment's notice. Her weight has always been balanced on the toes of her feet, ready to charge. She tends to keep her shoulders high and forward as well. Tsubame is a girl of remarkable, if a bit stiff, posture. She's certainly not the kind of student who slumps in her seat. Beyond her posture, she really doesn't pay too much attention to her appearance. While her body is, and always will be, her weapon of choice, Tsubame's very unconcerned with making it looks special in any way. She already make enough of an impression with her shockingly indigo hair that she really needn't worry about dressing it up further. she is, if nothing else, a girl concerned with practicality. The thick, curly strands are all too easy to grab hold of, and so she generally keeps them shorn close and held down with a bandana.
While Tsubame's facial features are overall feminine and appropriately delicate, her eyebrows are every bit as heavy as her hair. It tends to give her a stern cast to her expressions, especially as the headband tends to hide any movement they make skyward. She does seem to bear an almost permanent red cast to the tip of her nose and apples of her cheeks. If it weren't for the stern eyebrows, the flush might make her appear a bit more merry.
Like the rest of her family, Tsubame is stocky and strong. She'll never top 5'5", but she'll also never weigh in at less than 135lbs. Tsubame builds muscle definition readily and almost with greed. She likes to be strong and she likes other to know that she is too. As such, she's developed a penchant for sleeves attire whenever possible. It's not uncommon for Tsubame to sport of matching red tint to her shoulders as well. It has always been her personal (and extremely private) lament that her skin never picks up a tanned tone. Instead, she stays rather pale. The only defining characteristic between new scar tissue and old skin is the pinkish cast to the skin.
As with most shinobi, Tsubame's knuckles have been torn to pieces over and over again. She's given up on bothering with gloves, and bandages them only when absolutely necessarily. She sees it as a waste to ruin perfectly good linen by splitting her knuckles inside of them all over again. Between the lack of gloves and sleeves, Tsubame is a visibly rough and tumble sort of girl. Even if she were to sport a black eye, she would still lean forward and keep her shoulders high.
Personality:
Calm and steady, Tsubame doesn't seem to say much and the few things she does never never seem to make much sense. Tsubame considers herself as being on the inside always looking out. She sees herself as more of a watcher than anything else, and is often slow to action. It takes quite a bit of leverage to get her going, but once she does she's obstinate in her course. Tsubame never moves without thinking, never acts without consideration and never speaks without analyzing. Her words, her lie and her passions are far too precious to her to throw away on any old gesture. In a way, Tsubame tends to view other people with dismay. Still, she hasn't the patience to translate her taciturn statements and often finds herself at odds with others. The few people that get through her barriers Tsubame guards with a jealous zeal. She finds them so few and far between that she treats them like a precious jewel, even going to far as to carry on legitimate conversations to keep them happy.
At her core, Tsubame considers herself to be infinitely practical. She refuses to waste her time in any way shape or form. As a result her few terse statements tend to be rather abrasive at best. She sees no point in lying or mitigating the truth - not when it has a tendency to come out in the end anyways.
She does suffer from an almost overdeveloped sense of responsibility for the same reason she tends to look down on others. she considers the vast majority of the population incapable of fully reasoning things through, and since she can hardly blame them because of it, she instead internalizes all the blame. In Tsubame's mind those who are capable are those who should step forward. Often the people she has grown fond of are smothered under Tsubame's protective nature as a result.

History:
Tsubame considers herself to be a child of little notation. As with any other shinobi child she was expected to learn to fight young and ignore her scraped knees. Unlike many children, the notion caught on quickly and firmly. Her parents had few causes for complaint. Tsubame was never loud and usually compliant. It was a bit unsettling, however, how infrequently their daughter spoke. Their son, a boy seven years Tsubame's senior, chattered like a brook. Perhaps Tsubame was annoyed with Tsubaru's constant talk, or perhaps she could only get a word in edgewise if it was really, really important. At any rate, Tsubame soon learned that if she really wanted to be heard, it was best to stay silent. Words could be powerful and profound things if they were treated with respect. And so, Tsubame was a child who only spoke whenever it was absolutely necessary.
She made friends, as any good daughter was expected to. at least, she had playmates. In reality, only one playmate was worth Tsubame's attention. But then, only one playmate was really willing to put up with Tsubame's taciturn attitude. Suzume Toriko was promptly declared Tsubame's best (if not only) friend and that was that. No amount of persuasion on behalf of her parents or teachers could convince her to give the other students any of her affection. When Suzume's family failed to return from a mission, Tsubame refused to speak to her parents until they agreed to take her friend in. The house hadn't become that much quieter in the interim, but it was clear that what Tsubame wanted, she was determined to get. The Ishidas really didn't mind per se, they just hated to encourage that sort of behavior in their daughter. At least they now had a more active daughter out of the bargain.
Over all the deal was beneficial. Tsubame began to open up a bit more and was even willing to volunteer in class. Often her parents thought they were seeing the beginning of a competitive streak, as Tsubame was clearly focusing much more on her training. Whenever possible, Tsubame strove to not just out do her peers, but outclass them entirely. Failure was not even an acceptable term. When they weren't in class, Tsubame was pushing Suzume to train more with her, or challenging her brother to spar with her. She became of singular focus. As the graduation closed in, so did Tsubame. She withdrew from everyone but Suzume, who nevertheless suffered a sudden drop off in conversation. The girls shared less and less words and more and more blows as the last bit of testing was put underway. For a tense period of time, the Ishidas worried that their biological daughter had made a rival out of their adopted daughter. Meal times were tense around the house. Where Tsubame used to politely listen to everyone else's chatter, she now ate as quickly as possible, tersely excuse herself and leave before the rest of them had even really set in on their meals.
Behind closed doors the Ishidas began to discus the possibility of moving Suzume to another foster house in the hopes of improving Tsubame's cold attitude. They were baffled by the sudden change in affections. Suzume had always been Tsubame's clear favorite. How was it that she was so hard on the other girl now? Graduation seemed to calm Tsubame considerably however. soon after the event, she resumed her usually dinnertime motions and began to carry on proper conversations with Suzume again. To this day the Ishidas are still baffled by the ordeal and Tsubame has never sen any reason to explain herself to them.
She did however, carefully and concisely, explain herself to Suzume. She knew she only had to say one thing to make it all apparent, just one thing to make it all forgivable. "You can still die."
RP Sample:
I like her. She is my sister because she is not my brother. Tsubaru prattles endlessly - and to what end? It's all just noise. When she speaks, her words still have meaning and weight. There's intelligence behind her blue eyes, the kind that I so rarely see. Its more insight than anything else, and I crave insight like a desert flower craves rain. When I tell her that I could never understand which way the grass is going to grow she only smiles and tells me that the grass doesn't know either. I like her, she's quick - but capable - with her tongue.
Tsubame sighed and closed her eyes. She'd been thinking the matter through for some time now, trying to decide the best way to handle it. The other children were fine, but Suzume was another class entirely. At the same time Suzume wasn't disconnected like she was. Distantly she realized that something like making friends shouldn't be so hard for a five year old. It ought to be as natural and familiar as breathing.
But Tsubame was more selective about her breaths than most children. There would be a day soon when every last breath would be considered sacred. Tsubame had always known that shinobi life expectancy was appallingly low. They sacrificed their own skins so that the villagers wouldn't have to. In return, the villagers gave them domestic peace. It was a symbiotic relationship, and so Tsubame found now reason to resent it. The strong should protect the weak, she reasoned.
She toyed with a blade of grass as she watched the other young children chase each other about. They knew better than to call Tsubame over. She would come when she wanted to - that was the unspoken rule. Suzume hadn't come yet. She hadn't come yesterday either. She'd heard a low murmur that Suzume's parents had been sent out on a mission and she was staying with her neighbors for the time being. Tsubame gave a light sigh and settled in to watching. As usual, Suzu would be held up and only allowed an hour of play.
It was just as well, Tsubame needed more time to consider her revelation and how best to put forward to Suzume that she'd been dubbed her best friend.
Notes:
Considers Suzume to be her sister, though the state does not officially recognize them as siblings due to Suzume's adopted status.
