Kiri fidgeted with her bag once more, looking out into the wood. She was anxious. Not more than two days post graduation and she had already got a rather large shock.
She wasn't joining a team. As far as she knew, she was the only one to not get sorted into one of the Sound Villages latest squads. Apparently, she had been selected for another path.
She was to become the newest student to the "Otokage" as some of the students called him. She didn't know why or whose idea it was, but the decision had been made.
Kiri was actually very uneasy about this idea. There were rumors. People who went to work with this man were changed. Some were never even seen again. Granted, they were all just rumors, but what if that were true?
Pushing some of her hair behind her ear, she looked down at her few belongings, trying to push back her troubled thoughts. She was being silly. She was just going to get some different training than the other kids. No big deal. She would be fine.
Kiri settled down into sitting with her back to a tree, staring at the entrance to the underground academy. Nothing she could do now, but wait.

Orochimaru sat in the high backed chair of his underground hideout, he was lost in a few thoughts and plans when a random ninja wearing a sound village headband. “It’s time my lord you are needed at the academy”. He had forgotten that he had found another hopeful to join his entourage. She was supposed to be this prospective talent with a flair for chakra control. He was hoping she would past the entrance test; the last few hopefuls did not. He hated playing the nice and happy lord of the shiny and happy sound village.
From his seated position his feet and legs begun to flame and disappear slowly. This was a modified version of the body flicker technique and though it is slower it covers a greater range. Within a few moments he was materializing in front of a small girl who didn’t look like she could survive a mild breeze. He sighed in exasperation. “Hello I am Lord Orochimaru, you must be Kiri”. He spoke in his falsely sweet voice that he adopted when talking to those that he wished to recruit. “You have been selected to become one of my personal guard along with always being by my side I will personally teach you to become a better ninja, however there is a test you must pass beforehand to make sure you can handle it”.

The man's appearance had been rather sudden, startling her. Quickly regaining her composure, Kiri got to her feet and did her best to stand firm.
“Hello I am Lord Orochimaru, you must be Kiri," the man spoke. "You have been selected to become one of my personal guard along with always being by my side I will personally teach you to become a better ninja, however there is a test you must pass beforehand to make sure you can handle it”.
A test? Kiri squished a knot of uneasiness that past through her. Again, she could handle this. They wouldn't have given her to him if they didn't think she could handle it. She hoped.
"I understand, my lord," she said with a bow, strands of her black hair falling into her face. She fell quiet for a second, not sure what else to say. Lord Orochimaru was seemed calm enough on first glance. Maybe. She couldn't say normal, as he seemed far from it to her. But she couldn't see anything about him that was too alarming right off the bat. Taking a deep breath, she did all she could to keep own outer appearance up, but internally, the man still made her nervous.
"I will do as ask. You won't be disappointed, I promise," she added as an brief afterthought, eyes not quite meeting his.

Orochimaru smiled a wicked yet warming smile. It was odd that he could pull things like that off, but he was born gifted with the ability to be wicked, creepy, and warming at the same time. He looked at the girl and wondered if he should lessen the test to allow her to survive. However, that would not help him at all he needed someone who could control their chakra enough. "Your test is simple, I shall place a seal upon your skin that seal responds only to my chakra, if you do not get some of my chakra within20 minutes the seal will react violently with you chakra and cause you to explode" that was the easy part of the test, “now the only way you will ever get the required chakra to not explode is by causing me to use my Binding snake glare spell jutsu on you”. This was the test that he had given all other hopefuls and they all started the test confident that they could do this only to die trying. “I will only use the jutsu if you manage to back me into a corner where my only escape is by using the jutsu”. He dug his hand into his pocket and pulled out the scroll that held the seal “place this on yourself if you accept if not turn around and walk back into the academy and you shall be placed into a team.

Explode? And only had 20 minutes to stop it? That was a lot of pressure Kiri would be put under. In her heart, she sudden felt her faint doubt return.
Suddenly the small girl was pretty sure she knew why some kids never came back. The logical decision here would be to turn around and go back to the academy to beg her sensei to put her on a team. This was crazy. She was merely a genin, taking on a village leader. A fight that she had barely a ghost of a chance of winning. If that.
But if she turned around now, she knew of the crap she would catch from her former classmates. They already viewed her as worthless. A lowly wayward child of the Leaf. Someone too soft to ever be worth anything here.
If she joined Lord Orochimaru and passed his test, they wouldn't dare harass her about her heritage anymore. Or so she was pretty sure. And under his training, she would probably be able to put anyone who did in their place.
It was worth the risk. Taking one more deep breath, she took the scroll from the man. She could do this. She had to. Going back to the academy, no matter how much more sane of a choice it was, was not an option.
She opened the scroll and pressed in the the skin on the inside of her left forearm, waiting for it to take effect.

Orochimaru watched as she placed the seal on her skin. But unlike the others she seemed to understand the difficulty of the task that she was presented, the difficulty of course being that it was impossible to do. This was not a test of skill as there was no way a new genin would ever be able to push in into a corner and force him to use a jutsu. This was a test of subservice meaning that the only way out would be to admit that they were not skilled enough yet. However, being subservient while lacking skill and courage to stand up and fight and die if need be is not helpful to him or his plans for the future. She had to at least attempt the test to pass the first stage, which she did. The second part of the test would not be as easy as she had to impress him with whatever skill she had.
After impressing him if she realized that she was not strong enough to pull it off she had to be smart enough yet willing to show ineptitude to give up, although he usually does not forgive failure he had to have subordinates who understood that they needed his power and not the other way around. He found that the best way to make a loyal pawn was to show them just who the king was. He would be solidifying himself as her leader when she gives up and asks him to save her. So far none that were tested passed both test, there were some who realized their defeat but did not impress him, and some that impressed him but would not admit defeat, all had blown up. Then there were those who tried to take the safe road and turn back those he kept alive to be guinea pigs for his more gruesome experiments. “I believe it is your move child” he spoke as the seal glowed purple with the number 20 shining on it, this number would let her know how many minutes she had until she blew up.

Kiri stared at the seal for a brief moment, taking it the fact that it had a countdown at least. She would know how much time she had. Better than having to guess, but it was stress her almost just the same.
Trivial thoughts. She pushed them aside and moved into a fighting stance, shifting her staff onto her back and tossing her bag of belongings to one side, out of her way. She didn't have time to think about anything other than how she would do this.
There was no stream or river near her, so she would just have to make due with whatever groundwater she could pull. The soil was pretty moist from the recent rains. It wouldn't be as strong as it would be from a pure water source, but it was better than nothing.
“I believe it is your move, child,” Lord Orochimaru spoke.
Kiri firmed up her expression. Here went just about everything. She formed a couple of handsigns as quickly as she could and called up the jutsu that was no only her easiest, but the one she had gotten to most practice with. It used minimal chakra.
She could do this. Maybe. She didn't have any choice now. Internally, she kicked herself once more. Focus. Let her body do the job. Go on instinct. Thinking too much is what usually got her in trouble.
"Water Style: Water Whip Jutsu," she murmured, pulling a fair amount of water from the saturated ground to complete it. She whirled in a circle with a form of natural grace that she had always possessed, giving her water whip both speed and accuracy, lashing out at her opponent.

Orochimaru watched as she got herself ready to fight, at first it started just like the others. She looked down and saw that she would have a countdown and became relived, however as she kept looking her face became stressed no doubt register that the representation of the time on the seal was a way to weaken her mentally. Then she got her resolve back, which meant that she figured out that she would just be wasting time thinking about such things, he had to admit she figured all this out way faster than the others. Suddenly she was ion her fighting stance, he had thought she was going to attack with her staff but she shifted it to her back away from the action. If the staff was not her main form of fighting then what was, maybe this would be more entertaining then he thought, maybe she would be the one to finally pass this test. Her eyes darting all over most likely taking in her surroundings which was good for a ninja to do though not so good at hiding it. Her expression was one of stern determination and she meddled hand seals quickly though not quickly enough. noticing her hand seals and looking down toward the ground he noticed what she was doing with enough time to spare. It was a pretty smart plan and had she been a bit more experienced it probably would have worked, using the due from the ground to create a water whip when there were no other forms of water around was a great surprise attack from a genin he would not have expected it if he did not recognize the hand seals. Though because he did he managed to escape using the Attack Prevention jutsu he was able to sink into the ground and dodge the water whip with ease. Moving underneath the ground he emerged behind Kiri outstretched his hand and went to tap her on the shoulder to get her to turn around. "That was actually a good try however I am stronger and more experienced then you, so you will have to attempt to deceive and trap me fighting me head on will only get yourself blown up try again".

Kiri jerked away from Lord Orochimaru as he tapped her shoulder, using her held water more defensively to block any chance of him counterattacking her. She moved nimbly to one side, putting some space in between the two of them.
"That was actually a good try, however I am stronger and more experienced then you," the older man told her. "So you will have to attempt to deceive and trap me. Fighting me head on will only get yourself blown up. Try again."
He was right. Attacking him head on was a mistake and one that she could not afford to make. She needed to be quick and deceiving or she would never get anywhere. Her expression flicked slight frustration, but turned back to a mask of neutrality almost immediately. Part of her wanted to check the count down again, but that only wasted time.
She removed her staff from her back for sure now, eyes running over her Lord's general stance, analyzing it the best she could. She only knew four basic jutsu outside of academy training. She had to do this with just that little bit of knowledge.
Tick tock. Every second she stood here, she was wasting whatever little time she had. Every second counted.
Attack him indirectly.... she had an idea.
She broke into a brisk run, slipping up into the trees, hoping to break his line of sight on her. Moving into the branches, she took a a brief second to call a basic Water Clone, having it emerged from the tree instead of her and leaving her a chance to prepare to hit him from behind.
Part of her doubted that he would actually fall for it, but she needed to do something. The Water Clone bounded from tree to tree, disappearing every few second and tossing a few Shurikan as she went, but keeping it's distance.
In the meantime, Kiri worked into another water jutsu, funneling it underground. It wasn't easy manipulating chakra from this distance and trying to keep it subtle, but she was managing so far. She just needed to keep him busy for a few seconds longer.
